"My Mother's Valentines"
The Story of a 2002 Fabric Collection from Marcus Brothers Textiles

In 1996, Mary Mulari received from her mother, Helmi Koski, a bag full of valentines. The cards had been saved since the 1920s when Helmi attended country school in Palo, in northeastern Minnesota, and exchanged valentines with her friends. She treasured the valentines, labeling them with the year she received them. After her death in 1998 at age 81, her valentines became an even more precious possession to Mary and her family. Mary framed some of the valentines for her sisters and brother, and also featured some of the cards in applique projects by photocopying them on colored printer fabric. Her seminar students admired them and the idea of using a nostalgic card in their own embellishing projects. So Mary presented the idea for a fabric collection for Marcus Brothers to share the charming card designs.

The lead fabric features 15 of the Valentines from her mother's collection. The verses and line drawings from inside the valentines are offered in black, red, and blue versions. The flowers that appear on other fabrics in the collection are in the style of the floral trim on the Valentines.
